Construction trainees are building a bright future

Construction trainees are building a bright future 16th March 2012

For youngsters who desire to work in the construction industry, the effects of the recession on the housing industry couldn’t have come at a worse time, and with the rate of unemployment currently standing at 7.8 per cent , some may never feel that they can get a foothold on the career ladder.

Thankfully this wasn’t the case for 20 year old Mark Edwards from Burnham and David Rice, 21 years old from Slough, as they applied for a fast track recruitment initiative from leading housebuilder Persimmon Homes.

The FIRST Management Training Scheme, which was launched in July 2009, aimed to recruit 20 youngsters into a four year programme in either a technical or site-based capacity at one of the homebuilders 24 regional operations.

Both Mark and David were both successful in achieving for commercial roles with Persimmon Homes’ Thames Valley operation based in Maidenhead and are working closely with the company’s commercial director Dawnet McLaughlin.

Mark states: “I really had my heart set on working in construction as I believe it’s such an interesting sector. When I learnt that Persimmon has launched a training scheme with placements in my area, I applied straight away as I thought it would be a great opportunity to gain experience and knowledge about the industry.”

David adds: “The placement is really beneficial for Mark and I as we have the chance to work in both the buying and surveying departments as part of our role and development. We alternate every six weeks, which allows us to gain a broad understanding of the sector.”

Dawnet oversees the trainees and is already pleased with their progress with the company. She comments: “Both Mark and David really shone through in the interview process and their eagerness to learn and enthusiasm to get involved were two very strong deciding factors when selecting our Thames Valley candidates.”

Dawnet continues: “At Persimmon we are keen advocates of on-the-job training and we pride ourselves on investing in young talent and building careers in the construction industry. Although we are in a recession, it is still extremely important to continue this investment.

“The FIRST Management Training Scheme has provided many deserving and promising youngsters like Mark and David with the opportunity to gain a strong grounding and an in depth insight into our sector.”

Both Mark and David attend college once a week to further their theoretical education and are therefore able to put what they learn into practice with Dawnet and the team.

Dawnet concludes: “Mark and David are making a positive impression within the company and if they continue to demonstrate such dedication to the role, they are bound to enjoy a long and fruitful career with Persimmon.”
